MANILA, Philippines — The Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) has incurred about P1 billion in lost revenue by the end of April due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said Thursday.
“Medyo malaki po ang kawalan ng ating paliparan. Sa ngayon po, last tally po namin ay nung end of April, tumatala na po kami ng almost, mahigit P1 billion na losses sa ating revenue sa paliparan,” MIAA General Manager Ed Monreal said during the Laging Handa briefing.
(The loss in our airport is a bit big. Right now, based on our tally for the end of April, we have seen about P1 billion in lost revenue.)
Prior to the suspension of inbound flights, Monreal said airports were only operating at less than 10 percent due to the health crisis.
“Sa ngayon po, meron pong, pinakamarami na, bago tayo magsuspend ng incoming flights, ay nasa minsan sampung flights a day na lang po ang commercial flights natin. Wala pa pong 10 percent ang operasyon ng ating paliparan,” Monreal said.
(Right now, before suspending the incoming flights, there are only about 10 commercial flights a day. That’s less than 10 percent operations of our airports.)
An average of 768 flights per day was being mounted in the airports before the COVID-19 crisis, Monreal said.
The government has suspended incoming international flights for a week or until May 9.
