1st of 4 centers capable of 5,000 coronavirus tests per day opens

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine government on Tuesday (May 5) opened the first of several facilities which are capable of conducting 5,000 coronavirus tests per day.

Officials of the National Task Force COVID-19 attended a ceremony for the opening of Palacio de Manila on Roxas Boulevard as a so-called mega swabbing center.

It is the first of four test facilities to be established in Manila and the province of Bulacan, the task force said in a statement.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, Task Force chief Carlito G. Galvez Jr. and deputy Task Force chief Vince Dizon were at the ceremony.

The other testing facilities that would be opened this week are at Enderun Colleges in Taguig City, Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City and Philippine Arena in Bulacan province.

The testing facilities are capable of carrying out 5,000 tests a day, according to the task force.

The government’s target is to conduct 30,000 tests per day by the end of May.
