Activist shot dead in Iloilo City
MANILA, Philippines — An activist was shot dead in his rented house in Iloilo City early Thursday morning.
Lt. Col. Joem Malong, Western Visayas regional police spokesperson, identified the victim as Jory Porquia, 50, Iloilo regional coordinator of Bayanmuna.
Initial investigation showed that the victim was inside his house along Barangay Santo Niño Norte when he was shot by two gunmen.
Porquia died on the spot.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the motive of the attack and identify the killers.
Youth group League for Filipino Students (LFS) denounced the murder of Porquia during the coronavirus disease outbreak.
“The League of Filipino Students strongly condemns the killing of Jory Porquia! Fascists attacks continue while we’re in the middle of a pandemic. In this regime, those who genuinely help the poor and needy are threatened, harassed, and worst, killed,” read the statement posted on its official Facebook page.
