Cop, gov’t employee hurt in shooting after COVID-19 aid distribution

LEGAZPI CITY—A policeman and a government employee were wounded in a shooting on Friday (April 24) allegedly by communist rebels as they rode a motorcycle to leave the venue of COVID-19 cash aid distribution in the town of Monreal, Masbate province.

In a report, Masbate police said Cpl Romel Bartolay, of the Monreal police, and Ricky Canares, revenue collection clerk, had just taken part in cash distribution to residents of the town and were leaving the place on a motorcycle when they were shot past 1 p.m.

Canares took a bullet in the back while Bartolay was shot in the head. They were rushed to the rural health unit for first aid treatment.
