MANILA, Philippines — The Makati City government on Thursday announced that it will be releasing its second tranche of financial assistance to the city’s jeepney, tricycle, and pedicab drivers affected by the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine, through electronic money transfers.

In a statement, Mayor Abby Binay said the P2,000 financial assistance will be released through the Makatizen Card and GCash.

According to the Makati City mayor, drivers who are Makatizen cardholders will be credited through their e-Wallets.

Binay added that the cash aid will benefit the 1,826 members of the Makati’s Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association (JODA), as well as the city’s  5,952 tricycle drivers and 598 pedicab drivers.

“You can also use the amount credited to your Makatizen card or GCash e-Wallet to buy food and other products, pay bills, or send money to relatives in the provinces through the GCash app,” the mayor said.

Previously, Binay ordered the release of P16.7 million in financial assistance for Makati City’s tricycle, jeepney, and pedicab drivers.

The initial amount of P2,000 for each driver was released to help drivers get through the first two weeks of the enhanced community quarantine period.

This comes as the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine is still being enforced as cases of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country continue to rise.

As of Wednesday, the country has a total of 6,710 coronavirus cases, with 693 recoveries and 446 fatalities.
