MANILA, Philippines—At least 1,200 Philippine Military Academy cadets will donate blood to restock the country’s blood bank, which is crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Department of National Defense has pledged to heed the appeal of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) for blood donations, said PRC chair Sen. Richard Gordon in a statement on Wednesday (April 22).

“In this time of crisis, we need teamwork and everybody carrying their load,” Gordon said.

“There is no blood shortage yet, but we need to fill up the well so that we can continue to provide blood services to those in need,” Gordon said.

The country’s blood supply, which needs to be replenished regularly, may be at risk of depletion as COVID-19 cases continue to spread.

Gordon said patients’ need for blood transfusions has not stopped and there are those in hospitals who urgently need blood—cancer patients, accident victims and people with blood disorders.

Those who want to donate blood may contact the PRC 143 hotline or (+632) 8790-2300 for pre-assessment and schedule. Those living in the provinces may contact the nearest PRC in their areas.
