COVID-19 opportunism: Albay businesswoman selling alcohol for P700 per bottle falls in sting

LIGAO CITY—Police busted another case of alcohol price gouging, arresting a businesswoman who sold bottles of ethyl alcohol for P700 each when the correct price was just P650 per gallon.

Agents of the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) arrested at her store businesswoman Maizel Quigaman, 47, of the village of Dunao here.

Quigaman was entrapped in a buy-bust operation and sold a bottle of alcohol priced P700 to an undercover agent.

Seized at her store were 47 bottles of ethyl alcohol with the brand QS which she sells at an overprice.

Quigaman is now in CIDG custody facing criminal charges of violating the Price Act.

The Department of Trade and Industry has launched a crackdown on price gouging and hoarding of products essential in the fight against COVID-19, including rubbing alcohol and masks.

The DTI stepped up the campaign called Oplan Megashopper/Olea to bring down opportunists during the pandemic.
