Spitters face P5K fine, prison term in Muntinlupa City

MANILA, Philippines — Those who spit or expel substances like phlegm or mucus from their nose and mouth in public places will now be arrested in Muntinlupa City.

To curb the spread of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the local government has banned the unhygienic practice as well as the disposal of used personal protective equipment (PPE) suits in public places.

Mayor Jaime Fresnedi approved City Ordinance No. 2020-089 or the “Anti-Spitting and Anti-Littering Ordinance of 2020” on Monday.

“Since COVID-19 is mainly transmitted through contact or respiratory droplets which can last for a few days on surfaces, we are passing an ordinance penalizing hazardous societal habits that are considered as public nuisances and potentially expose other persons to COVID-19,” he said.

Under the ordinance, improper disposal of PPEs in public places shall also be penalized. Violators face a P5,000 fine plus up to six months in jail.

The city government asked the public to document violations through photos or video recording.
