MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo on Tuesday made a surprise visit to private partners of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) in its free shuttle service project for COVID-19 frontliners.

OVP launched on March 18 its free shuttle service to health workers, who had a hard time reporting to work in hospital since the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine imposed by the government effectively suspended all mass transportation in Metro Manila. The OVP free shuttle service for frontliners ended April 14.

The strict quarantine across Luzon was supposed to end by midnight of April 13. But President Rodrigo Duterte extended it up to April 30 as cases of COVID-19 on the country continue to soar.

Robredo said they already transferred their findings and recommendations regarding the free shuttle service to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), which would now handle OVP’s free shuttle service Route 3 (SM Mall of Asia in Pasay to Amang Rodriguez Hospital in Marikina) and Route 4 (EDSA Macapagal Avenue to Manila Central University Hospital in Caloocan City).

“Ngayon ang huling araw ng Libreng Shuttle Service ng aming Tanggapan. Bilang paghahanda, nakipag-ugnayan ang aming Tanggapan sa [DOTr], upang magbahagi ng aming mga karanasan at rekomendasyon, at siguruhing makakakuha pa rin ng ganitong serbisyo ang mga tumangkilik ng ating Shuttle Service,” Robredo explained.

(Today is the last day of OVP’s Free Shuttle Service. As preparation, our office is coordinating with DOTr in order to share our experience and recommendation, and ensure that this kind of service will remain available to our frontliners using our Shuttle Service.)

“Sa pagplano ng inyong biyahe, maaring magtungo sa Department of Transportation-Philippines Facebook page. Makikita rin ang routes ng DOTr at Quezon City LGU sa Sakay.ph app,” she added.

This free shuttle service for frontliners is just among other OVP projects that were initiated with its partner agencies in response to the COVID-19 crisis. OVP has also been offering free dormitories for health workers in different locations in Metro Manila and other provinces and raised over P50.9 million, which was used to buy personal protective equipment (PPEs) and food, among others, that were distributed to health workers in various hospital nationwide.
