1st day of sneakers auction: Cainta mayor racks up P132K to boost aid for constituents

MANILA, Philippines — Cainta Mayor Johnielle Keith “Kit” Nieto has been able to auction off three of his sneakers for a total of P132,000 to augment the fund for his local government’s aid to constituents affected by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Nieto said that three sneakers — with base prices starting at P30,000, P10,000, and P13,000 — were sold at P71,000, P26,000, and P35,000, respectively, on the first day of his sneakers auction.

Earlier, Nieto said he was auctioning off some of his personal belongings to provide for Cainta residents not covered by the social amelioration program of the national government.

Of the municipality’s 320,000 residents, more than 37,000 were given social amelioration cards to receive financial assistance from the national government.

Nieto said he plans to auction three of his sneakers every day until the quarantine period is over.

As of 8 a.m. Monday, Cainta has 52 confirmed COVID-19 cases, including nine fatalities and two recoveries.

In the Philippines, there are 5,233 COVID-19 cases as of Tuesday, where 295 have recovered while 335 succumbed to the viral disease.
