COVID-19 cases in PH climb to 4,648 as 220 more persons get infection

MANILA, Philippines — Another 220 individuals in the country have contracted the novel coronavirus disease, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Sunday. This raised the total count to 4,648.

DOH also said that COVID-19 has now killed 297 people in the country as it recorded 50 more deaths, even as 40 more persons were able to recover from the disease, raising the number of recoveries to 197 as of Sunday.

COVID-19 is a respiratory illness caused by the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2, which outbreak started in China’s Wuhan City in Hubei province in late 2019.

For most people, the virus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and death.

Globally, the virus already infected more than 1,783,720 people and killed more than 108,900 as of April 12. On the other hand, over 404,860 people have recovered so far from the disease.

The World Health Organization has declared COVID-19 a pandemic.
