NTC warns vs free Netflix text scam

MANILA, Philippines — The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) cautioned the public on a circulating fake text message offering free streaming of Netflix for two months as several parts of the country went under quarantine due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) crisis.

NTC said the text message is a scam, saying the streaming giant did not offer any free subscriptions as the quarantine period continues due to the coronavirus disease.

“Babala: Huwag pong maniwala sa text na nagkakaloob ng libreng Netflix sa loob ng 2 buwan dahil sa quarantine (COVID19), ito po ay isang scam,” read the NTC public message on Black Saturday.

(Warning: Do not believe any text message offering free Netflix subscription for two months because of quarantine, this is a scam.)

To date, the Philippine health department documented 4,428 confirmed cases of coronavirus disease including 157 recoveries and 247 deaths.

According to John Hopkins University, the ailment has infected more than 1.6 million people and killed more than 102,000 people worldwide.
