ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines—A marital squabble took a deadly turn early Tuesday when the husband lighted a stick of dynamite and threw it at his wife inside their home in Zamboanga City’s Rio Hondo quarter, killing them both and a son and seriously wounding four other children, police said.
Senior Supt Edwin De Ocampo, Zamboanga City police chief, said initial investigation showed that prior to the explosion, which occurred before 2 a.m., Agsaali Subaani had a quarrel with his wife Jannuka. Subaani was allegedly into dynamite fishing.
“In the course of their argument, the husband allegedly took a (a stick of) dynamite, lit it and threw it at his wife,” De Ocampo said.
Aside from the couple, their 17-year-old son Pansidal was also killed in the blast.
But 11-year-old Pasig, another son who was wounded, denied the family was engaged in dynamite fishing. He said they were already asleep when the explosion happened.
Pasig said his father had an enemy who also sells fish on the RT Lim Boulevard.
Pasig told the Inquirer that they did not keep dynamite in the house as his parents were not engaged in fishing.
“They just buy fish and sell it to passersby and neighbors,” he said.
In critical condition were Pasig’s siblings – Singa, 10; Puja, 9; and Goa-Goa, 7.
Police investigators said the children suffered injuries from shrapnel, which dynamite does not have.
