PUERTO PRINCESA CITY –– The health department is keen on tapping the police to enforce the quarantine protocol for uncooperative persons under investigation (PUI) for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Dr. Mario Baquilod, director of the Department of Health in Mimaropa, in a virtual press conference on Tuesday, said health facilities may request help from the police to enforce strict quarantine protocol for patients who are under home quarantine.

This was after a PUI, who was previously admitted at the Ospital ng Palawan, refused medical treatment and insisted on going home, died on April 3.

Baquilod said that the hospital had no violation and explained to the patient’s family the implications of refusing medical treatment, and going home against medical advice.

He pointed out that health facilities had the sole discretion over patient management as long as guidelines set by the DOH are strictly followed.

Baquilod said they respect patients’ rights and reminded the hospitals that public safety is a priority.

The doctors and nurses who had direct contact with the patient are now placed under quarantine.

Rotational shifts were assigned per team on a two-week basis to ensure that the hospital has an adequate workforce, while other personnel are on quarantine.
