THE UNIVERSITY of San Carlos (USC) defended one of its three titles in the 2nd Sinulog Football Cup.
USC retained its Ladies Open title after winning all of its four matches held last Sunday at the San Roque football field.
Unlike last year, the Ladies Open followed a league-type format because the category only had five entries.
USC dominated last year’s inaugural Sinulog Football Cup after it won three titles—the Men’s Open, Ladies Open and Girls 17.
However, its men’s team dropped out of contention in the elimination round this year.
Kurt Acre, one of the tournament officials, said USC had a chance to enter the round-of-16 as one of the wild card entries. However, it lost in the shootout.
USC also had a Boys 17 entry, which settled for the first runner-up honors after it lost to Springdale A in a shootout during the titular battle.
Its Girls 17 also failed to retain its title after bowing out in the semifinal round against St. Theresa’s College (STC) A.
The Inter-Company title went to Innodata A after edging Convergy’s A, 2-0, in the final.
Innodata A advanced to the finals with a 1-0 dismissal of Xlibris A in the semifinals while Convergy’s A grabbed its finals ticket with a 2-1 win over KN Ferraren.
The 38-Above title went to Cebu Union A which surged ahead of San Roque Football Club (SRFC) Arsenal, 1-0, in their finals match.
Cebu Union A got its finals ticket at the expense of its sister team Cebu Union B, 1-0, while SRFC Arsenal advanced after prevailing in a shootout against Erco A, 3-2.
Tournament Manager Francis Ramirez said he would have to meet with the Cebu Amateur Football Club (CAFC) who helped him organized the event for the overall assessment of the 7-a-side festival type tournament.
All proceeds of the event go to the CAFC, which also funded the festival.
The Sinulog Foundation, through the Cebu City Sports Commission, provided for the food of all organizing staff while the Cebu City Government negotiated for the partnership with the AKTV.
