‘Fallen hero’: Doctor at Asian Hospital dies of COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — The Asian Hospital and Medical Center on Monday honored one of its doctors who had succumbed to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

In a Facebook post, Asian Hospital announced the passing of Dr. Mary Grace Lim, 40 years old, who joined the growing list of medical practitioners who have died due to the infectious respiratory disease.

“Sorrow befalls upon our hospital as we have lost one of our own in the fight against this pandemic,” the post read.

“We honor her as a great patient safety advocate who was an instrument in sealing the deal of our third Joint Commission International Reaccreditation,” it added. “She has affected and helped countless lives in her wonderful journey in Asian Hospital and Medical Center.”

The Muntinlupa-based hospital, which has so far discharged 17 COVID-19 patients, expressed its “deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family of our fallen hero.”

“We have lost a remarkable doctor, a good friend, and mentor to our budding health care workers. Asian Hospital, especially the Department of Emergency Medicine and Quality Management Department may have lost a great frontliner to COVID-19, but as one family, we promise her and our countrymen, now more than ever, that we will remain unfazed and will keep on fighting to finally put an end to this pandemic.

“Today, heaven welcomes another angel who willingly risked her life to help save others. As one community, let us all offer a moment of silence for the eternal repose of her soul,” it said.

The Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines Inc. (PHAPI) earlier said at least 12 doctors have succumbed to the novel coronavirus.

To date, the virus, which was first detected in Hubei, China late last year, has infected 3,246 people in the Philippines and killed 152 as of Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile, of 64 patients were able to recover.
