Navotas mayor to residents: ‘Stay home or else, stay in jail’

MANILA, Philippines — With the number of arrested quarantine violators in the city now at 488, Navotas Mayor Toby Tiangco on Thursday called on residents to just stay home and help prevent the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) from spreading.

“Nakadepende po sa bawat isa sa atin ang kalutasan ng problema sa COVID-19. Tayo ba ay bahagi ng solusyon o ng problema? Stay home or else, stay in jail,” Tiangco wrote on Facebook.

(Our safety depends on how we will solve the COVID-19 crisis. Are we going to be part of the problem or the solution? Stay home or else, stay in jail.)

Latest data from the Navotas City government show that from March 20 to April 2, authorities have arrested 488 adults for defying quarantine guidelines. Of this number, 29 already facing charges.

Tiangco said that if residents will strictly follow home quarantine, there will be less COVID-19 patients in hospitals.

“Sa pananatili natin sa bahay, maiiwasan nating makapitan ng virus. Mababawasan ang mga pasyente. Mas mapadadali ang trabaho ng ating mga health workers at frontliners,” he said.

(If we stay in our homes, it will stop us from catching the virus. The number of patients will decrease which will allow an easier job for health workers and frontliners.)
