MANILA, Philippines — Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto on Wednesday assured city residents that they are safe from being infected with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) even if they live near medical facilities such as hospitals that are treating coronavirus patients.
Sotto took to Twitter to explain that the coronavirus cannot pass through hospital walls.
“Nauunawan natin ang pangamba ng mga nakatira malapit sa covid-related facilities. ngunit LIGTAS ang mga pasilidad na to,” he wrote on Twitter.
(We understand the anxiety of those living near COVID-related facilities. But these areas are safe.)
“Kahit katabi pa mismo ng bahay nyo ang gusali… HINDI PO TUMATAGOS NG PADER ANG CORONAVIRUS,” he added.
(Even if your house is near the facility, the coronavirus won’t pass through the walls.)

Sotto urged city residents to avoid a “NIMBY” (not in my backyard) attitude. He shared an article about residents in a New York City area who successfully lobbied to shutter plans for coronavirus testing laboratory due to complaints of neighbors.
As of March 31, 89 Pasig residents tested positive for COVID-19.
