The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said the crime rate in Metro Manila fell by 56.9 percent after the region was placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) to stop the spread of the new coronavirus disease.
NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Debold Sinas said that among the crimes committed in the metropolis, carnapping was most prevalent, followed by rape, theft and robbery.
Sinas attributed the decline to the public’s controlled movement during the ECQ.
“There are fewer people now … They are at home so criminals are easier to detect and there are less victims on the street,” he said.
At least 25,350 policemen have been deployed to man the checkpoints and implement the quarantine. —Jodee A. Agoncillo
