TARLAC CITY –– Guided by a prototype generated by a 3-D printer, faculty members of the Tarlac State University (TSU) have started making 300 face shields for front liners battling the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
University employees set up a production line to produce face shields at the campus’ Engineering Library, which are scheduled for distribution on Thursday (March 26) to the medical workers of the Central Luzon Doctors Hospital, the Tarlac Provincial Hospital, and the Jecsons Medical Center, said Dr. Myrna Mallari, TSU president.
The university formed three groups tasked to augment the supplies of people combating COVID-19 — a face shield task force, a face mask task force that plans to generate 1,000 masks, and a sanitizer task force.
The faculty of TSU’s College of Science made 170 bottles of alcohol-based sanitizers and are working to create more once fresh ingredients are purchased.
“The alcohol-based sanitizer is composed of 70 percent ethanol, aloe vera gel that serves as a moisturizing agent, and essential oils like lavender for the scent, and tea tree oil that has antibacterial properties,” said Jaidriel Meg Cabanding, a science instructor and a registered chemist.
Cabanding said they followed the ethanol concentration recommended by the Integrated Chemists of the Philippines.
