Manila gov’t to turn public schools into 5,000 isolation rooms for PUIs

MANILA, Philippines —  The city government of Manila on Wednesday said it will convert public elementary schools and high schools into isolation rooms for persons under investigation (PUIs) should hospitals in Manila reach full capacity and can no longer treat patients.

“If dumami pa nang husto, we can make about 5,000 rooms converting our public elementary and high school as quarantine area for mild PUIs. Ibig sabihin mailayo agad,” Manila Mayor Isko Moreno said in a Laging Handa public briefing when asked about the local government’s preparation in case COVID-19 the slum areas of the city.

(If the number of patients with coronavirus disease increases, we can make 5,000 rooms by converting our public elementary and high schools as quarantine areas for PUIs with mild symptoms. That means these patients will be isolated.)

“Ilayo na kaagad, ilagay na namin sa isang area na magamit, pansamantalang tirahan habang binibigyan ng tamang tugon yung mga nasa ospital,” he added.

(We will isolate them immediately and place them under quarantine in temporary shelters while those in the hospitals get treated.)

As of Tuesday, the number of positive cases of coronavirus disease in Manila increased to 30 from 13 cases. Also, there are now 89 persons under investigation for the respiratory disease.
