Calamba, Laguna records first coronavirus case

MANILA, Philippines — Calamba City in Laguna reported Wednesday its first confirmed case of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), the city’s mayor said.

Calamba City Mayor Justin Marc Chipeco said the city’s first COVID-19 positive case is a resident of Barangay Canlubang.

“CALAMBA COVID-19 PATIENT 1 is a resident of Barangay Canlubang. Contact Tracing is now being undertaken by the City Government and Health Officials,” Chipeco said in a Facebook post.

Chipeco reminded the city’s residents to stay at home and follow the government’s orders for the duration of the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine.

Mayors of the Laguna towns of Santa Maria, Mabitac, Famy, Siniloan, Pangil, Pakil, Paete, and Kalayaan have meanwhile imposed lockdowns in their respective areas to curb the spread of the coronavirus disease.

To date, the Department of Health has confirmed 552 cases of COVID-19. Of this number, the disease has killed 35 people while 20 people have recovered from it.

The disease, which is caused by the SARS-CoV-2, can have a mild effect for others but it can be a high risk for older adults and for those with existing health conditions.
