LEGAZPI CITY—Police in Bicol attributed a sharp decline in criminality to the enhanced community quarantine being enforced in the entire Luzon island to contain the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Brig. Gen. Anthony Alcaneses, Bicol police chief, said only nine crimes were recorded in the region between March 17, the day President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the enhanced quarantine, and March 23.
These were physical injuries, rape, murder, homicide and theft.
Alconeses said crime prevalence dropped by 84 percent from 51 crimes committed in the same period in 2019.
But violations of the quarantine and curfew led to 57 arrests from March 17 to March 22.
