MANILA, Philippines — Police confiscated P8.6-million worth of overpriced surgical masks from a retired Chinese businessman and two other suspects during a bust in Pasay City on Saturday.
According to the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, the three suspects were arrested for selling the overpriced masks online in an operation launched by the police at about 7 p.m.
Police said the trio were selling a box containing 50 surgical masks for P1,700 or P34 per piece, higher than the P1,400 per box or P28 per piece as approved by the Department of Trade and Industry.
A total of 5,110 boxes of surgical masks were confiscated from the suspects.
They will be facing charges for violation of the Price Act and Consumer Act of the Philippines, police said.
