COVID crisis: Manila grants moratorium to market stallholders from paying rents
MANILA, Philippines — Rent payment of market vendors and stall owners in Manila, including those in the private and public sector, is temporarily suspended for the duration of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Luzon, the city government said Friday.
The suspension came after the Manila City Council approved Resolution No. 85 series of 2020 to alleviate the impact of the nearly month-long ECQ on public and private markets.
“(The City Council) grants a moratorium to all market stallholders within the City of Manila, whether public or privatized, from paying their rents for the duration of the enhanced community quarantine due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19),” read the resolution.
The quarantine, which runs from March 17 until midnight of April 13, mandated residents to stay in their respective homes to contain the spread of coronavirus disease.
Establishments offering basic goods including hospitals, groceries, supermarkets and banks are open during the quarantine.
