MANILA, Philippines – A Filipino national in Athens, Greece tested positive for COVID-19, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed on Wednesday.
According to DFA, the Filipino is currently under home quarantine as only mild symptoms of the latest coronavirus strain were seen.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through the Philippine Embassy in Athens, Greece, confirms the report of a Filipino national who tested positive for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in Athens, Greece,” DFA said.
“The Filipino national is reportedly exhibiting mild symptoms and is under home quarantine,” DFA added. “The Embassy is in close coordination with the local health authorities in Greece to assure that she is given maximum care and support. The Embassy’s emergency number has been made available for the said Filipino.
As of Wednesday, there are 202 patients who tested positive for COVID-19 in the Philippines, 17 of which have died while seven have recovered.
Overseas, there are 120 Filipinos with COVID-19, the bulk of which contracted the disease aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship previously docked in Yokohama, Japan.
“The Embassy likewise continues to monitor the situation of all Filipino nationals in Greece and stands ready to provide assistance as needed,” DFA noted.

The COVID-19 is a respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus that first emerged in China’s city of Wuhan in Hubei province in late 2019.
The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses named the novel coronavirus as SARS-CoV-2.
Coronavirus is a family of viruses, whose surfaces have a crown-like appearance. The viruses are named for the spikes on their surfaces. Worldwide, over 193,000 COVID-19 cases have been recorded, while at least 7,865 have died.
Meanwhile, another 81,743 patients have recovered.
