MANILA, Philippines — To ensure everyone’s protection from COVID-19, the local government of Mandaluyong City rescued street dwellers as part of its implementation of the enhanced community quarantine.
“Nagkaroon po tayo ng rescue operation sa ating street dwellers upang masiguro na silang nakatira sa lansangan ay maiiwas sa posibleng exposure sa COVID-19,” Mandaluyong Mayor Menchie Abalos wrote in her Facebook post.
(We conducted rescue operation for our street dwellers to ensure that they will not be exposed to the COVID-19.)
So far, personnel of the Mandaluyong City’s Social Welfare Department saved 38 people. They will be given basic necessities including food and shelter at the city hall.
In a separate statement, the Mandaluyong City Public Information Office (PIO) said the local government would provide grocery items to poor families to allow strict home quarantine.
“Groceries good for a week would be dropped off for every household. This would be done once a week for a month. No one is allowed to get out of the house. Definitely no queue, no lines allowed! Otherwise, it would defeat the purpose of quarantine/isolation,” read the statement.
Barangay officials are also tasked to deliver the food items to each household, the Mandaluyong PIO said.
To date, confirmed cases of coronavirus disease in Mandaluyong City are now at seven. The city also listed nine persons under investigation and 201 persons under monitoring.
