While Spain is placed under near-total lockdown, residents went to their windows to applaud the healthcare workers fighting the spread of COVID-19.
Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez explained the details of the lockdown last Saturday, March 14, following an increase in the number of infections in the said country.
After the announcement, various people living in Spain decided to show their gratitude and support for the health professionals working to slow down the disease’s spread. People in Madrid let out cheers and whistles along with their clapping, as seen in a clip posted by one @OmarFaouri on Twitter yesterday, March 15.

Meanwhile, Twitter user @liconoc showed the outpouring of support from her neighbors in the city of Valencia.

A resident (@sqecter) from Pamplona also uploaded her city’s gesture, adding that “all of [Spain] burst into a round of applause at 10 p.m. for doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers.”

The unprecedented show of support in Spain comes after Italy was also placed under similar lockdown measures. Those living in Italy took to their windows and sang in unison to deal with the social isolation imposed as a measure against COVID-19.
Spain’s near-total lockdown is among the precautions introduced as part of a 15-day state of emergency officially declared by the government. Spain, as of this writing, has 5,753 confirmed COVID-19 cases and has lost 183 people to the disease. JB
