Biliran mayor targets cockfights in COVID-19 measures, offers P10,000 reward

TACLOBAN CITY – The mayor of Naval town in Biliran has offered P10,000 in reward for information on illegal cockfights.

Mayor Gerard Espina banned cockfights as part of precautionary measures against the disease COVID-19.

Espina said he would spend his own money for the reward “especially if the violators are arrested by the police.”

Chickens seized from violators, he said on a Facebook post, would be given as food to authorities manning checkpoints in the town.

Espina also requested owners of barbeque stalls to accept orders from customers but prohibit them from staying and dining in.

Curfew hours have been enforced in the municipality from 9 p.m. until 5 a.m. to prevent the spread of the disease.

People coming in from areas with confirmed COVID-19 cases are required to go on a 14-day quarantine at home.

The mayor also asked people to cooperate to ensure Naval, the Biliran capital, stayed COVID-19-free.
