MANILA, Philippines — Long queues of people and vehicles marked the second day of the implementation of the community quarantine in Metro Manila, as the government moves to contain the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.
Checkpoints were set up by authorities at 56 major thoroughfares, manned by police and military, going in and out of Metro Manila, keeping people from leaving and entering the capital region unless they are included in the government’s list of exemptions for the community quarantine.
Exemptions include workers, passengers transiting to airports for travel abroad, health personnel, authorized government officials, and those traveling for medical and humanitarian purposes, persons providing basic services and public utilities, and essential skeletal workforce in government offices.

Authorities will be stricter in enforcing the community quarantine in its second day of implementation, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
On Monday morning, PNP deputy chief for operations Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar inspected some border checkpoints to ensure that protocols are being observed by the police.
The community quarantine took effect on Sunday and will end on April 14.
