/ 04:55 PM March 15, 2020

MANILA, Philippines — The Makati City government will implement a curfew from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. starting Monday to restrict the movement of its residents in light of the imposition of community quarantine in Metro Manila to prevent the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

In her live announcement on Facebook, Makati City Mayor Abby Binay said malls in the city will also be prohibited from operating until the quarantine ends on April 14.

However, pharmacies, grocery stores, clinics, and banks will be allowed to operate.

Other establishments are also urged to practice or implement measures in line with social distancing.

Binay also said that the city hall will remain open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

As of Sunday, the city already has 14 confirmed COVID-19 cases.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) earlier announced an 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew would be imposed in the capital region.

However, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) later clarified it would not be immediately enforced, as local governments need to first pass local ordinances to implement it in their respective jurisdictions.
