Today, March 13, is the 19th death anniversary of National Scientist Encarnacion Alzona. Born on March 25, 1895, Alzona was known as a historian, professor, patriot and supporter of women’s suffrage. She founded the Philippine Historical Committee in 1955, served as National Historical Commission chair and the University of the Philippines regent from 1959 to 1966. She was conferred the title of National Scientist by President Ferdinand Marcos in 1985. She died in 2001 at the age of 105. —Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
