MANILA, Philippines — Government work in all offices of San Juan City has been canceled on Friday to give way to disinfection of public infrastructures to stop the spread of 2019 coronavirus disease or COVID-19.
In a statement issued on Thursday, San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora suspended work as sanitation of government offices will be done until the weekend.
“Mayor Francis Zamora is canceling work in all local government offices of San Juan City this Friday to allow sanitation and disinfection of all offices in the city hall including all the public schools and headquarters of San Juan Philippine National Police, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology and Bureau of Fire Protection,” read the statement.

However, the City’s Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Office and health office are required to report for work on Friday to assist in the sanitation procedure.
Currently, there are eight confirmed cases of coronavirus disease in the city.
To lessen the risk of transmission of the COVID-19, classes in San Juan City including other Metro Manila cities were canceled from March 10 to March 14.
To date, Philippine health department reported 49 positive cases of COVID-19. Of which, two died due to the coronavirus disease, which was caused by the novel coronavirus.
International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses named the novel coronavirus as SARS-CoV-2.
The coronavirus causes mild symptoms such as fever and cough for most people but old people and those who have existing health conditions could be a high risk for the disease.
Coronavirus is a family of viruses, which surfaces have a crown-like appearance. The viruses are named for the spikes on their surfaces.
