MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Thursday suspended the issuance of voter certifications at its main office in Intramuros, Manila until March 20, 2020 as a preventive measure against the 2019 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

“To reduce the risk of #COVID19 transmission, the issuance of voter certifications at the COMELEC main offices (in Intramuros only) is suspended until 20 March 2020,” Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said in a tweet.
“COMELEC field offices will continue providing this service, subject to appropriate precautionary measures,” he added.
On Wednesday, the number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines leaped to 49 after the Department of Health (DOH) confirmed that 16 individuals tested positive for the viral illness.
