LUCENA CITY –– The Communist Party of the Philippines urged the Filipino people to compel President Duterte to abrogate the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States government.
“With the recent action of the Duterte regime informing the US government of its intention to terminate the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), it is incumbent on the Filipino people to press for the complete abrogation of the treaty and other demands in line with upholding national sovereignty,” the CPP said in a statement issued Wednesday.
The group said President Duterte’s signing the notice of termination last February 11 was “only the first step.”
“Thus, it has become urgent for them to unite, raise their collective voices to see the end of the oppressive treaty,” the CPP stressed.
On Monday, President Duterte insisted that his stance on the VFA would not change even as some senators asked the Supreme Court to compel him to seek Senate concurrence in terminating the key military pact with the United States.
