MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday alerted the public about a bogus message advising people to avoid specific malls and other establishments that were frequented by those infected by the 2019 coronavirus disease or COVID-19.
The fake message has been circulating online which cites that patients, who tested positive for COVID-19, visited certain hotels and malls.
“Fake content alert: DOH flags the circulating message advising the public to avoid certain malls, hotels and establishment as fake,” the country’s health department said in a statement.
The country’s health department also cautioned fake messages about designated red zone areas that should be avoided.
“Fake content alert: DOH flags the circulating message regarding the red zone areas as fake,” read the statement.
DOH also asked the public to stop disseminating another bogus message about blood collection tubes discovered in Zambales beach.
DOH reminded to be vigilant and follow official announcements and public advisories through https://www.doh.gov.ph/.
To prevent the spread of coronavirus disease, the health department advised the public to follow its health protocols:
1. Practice frequent and proper handwashing – wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available.
2. Practice proper cough etiquette.
i. Cover mouth and nose using handkerchief/tissue (sleeves or crook of the elbow may also be used to cover the mouth when coughing or sneezing).
ii. Move away from people when coughing.)
iii. Do not spit.
iv. Throw away used tissues properly.
v. Always wash your hands after sneezing or coughing.
vi. Use alcohol or sanitizer.
3. Maintain distance at least one meter away from individual/s manifesting with flu-like symptoms.
4. Avoid unprotected contact with farm or wild animals (alive or dead), animal markets, and products that come from animals (such as uncooked meat).
5. Ensure that food is well-cooked.
Earlier, DOH said 33 people in the Philippines have been diagnosed with the 2019 coronavirus disease.
The disease was caused by the novel coronavirus or SARS-CoV-2, which was first reported in China’s Wuhan City of Hubei province in December 2019.
The coronavirus is a family of viruses whose surfaces have crown-like appearance.
