Commemoration of 1st circumnavigation of world postponed

CEBU CITY –– To prevent the potential spread of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), the National Quincentennial Committee has postponed upcoming gatherings related to the commemorations of the first circumnavigation of the world.

In a post on its Facebook page on Monday evening, the committee announced that it has rescheduled some of its activities in light of the recent developments of the new virus.

The activities include the 7th Quincentennial Lecture Series in Pasay City scheduled this March 16; the 7th Local Historical Committees Network General Assembly (April 26, Cebu City); 7th International Conference of the International Council on Historical and Cultural Cooperation – Southeast Asia (April 27 – 29, Cebu City), and the launching of the National Memory Project (April 28, Cebu City).

The National Quincentennial Committee’s 7th Local Historical Network General Assembly was moved to September 23 in Cebu City, while the 7th International Conference on Historical and Cultural Cooperation will be held in the same city from September 24 to 26.

The committee has yet to announce the date for the 7th Quincentennial Lecture Series in Pasay City, and the launching of the National Memory Project in Cebu City.

The 2021 Quincentennial Commemorations in the Philippines marks the 500th anniversary of the first circumnavigation of the world by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

It also marks the 500th anniversary of the Christianization of the Philippines and the victory of local chieftain Lapu-Lapu and his men over Magellan and the Spanish soldiers in 1521.
