Vico Sotto says 1 of 10 coronavirus patients is a Pasig local

MANILA, Philippines — One of the 10 individuals who tested positive for the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country is a resident of Pasig City, Mayor Vico Sotto confirmed Monday.

“As announced by the DOH, there is a COVID-19 patient (not a Pasig resident) currently confined in Medical City-Pasig. There is also a COVID-19 patient who is a Pasig resident, but is currently confined in a private hospital outside of Pasig,” the mayor wrote in a Facebook post.

Both patients are part of the four latest COVID-19 cases affirmed by the Department of Health (DOH) late Sunday night. To date, the total number of COVID-19 infected persons in the country is 10.

One of the patients Sotto was referring to as a Pasig City resident is the 32-year-old Filipino (8th case) who recently traveled to Japan. The patient is now in St. Luke’s Medical Center in Taguig City.

The other one referred to by Sotto is the 86-year-old American (9th case) currently admitted to The Medical City in Ortigas. The patient, however, is a resident of Marikina City as confirmed by the local government unit.

Sotto assured that the Pasig City government is closely coordinating with DOH, adding the “hospitals are secure.”

The local government, as among precautionary measures, has canceled public events and gatherings while applications for permits to do large private events have been put on hold, according to Sotto.

He also said that Pasig City is tracing contacts of confirmed cases and disinfecting public spaces while its dedicated response teams are observing proper protocols to deal with the virus.

The International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses has named the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19 as SARS-CoV-2.

Coronavirus is a family of viruses, which surfaces have a crown-like appearance. The viruses are named for the spikes on their surfaces.
