According to the final results of the 2016 Annual Survey of the Philippine Business and Industry recently released by the Philippine Statistics Authority, there were 30,889 establishments and 495,973 employees in the accommodation and food service sector.
This sector includes the provision of short-stay accommodation for visitors and other travelers and the provision of complete meals and drinks fit for immediate consumption.
The top industries in terms of number of establishments were restaurants (23.4 percent), cafeterias (15.3 percent) and fast-food chains (14.3 percent).
In terms of employment, the top industries were fast-food chains (27.8 percent), restaurants (26.4 percent), and hotels and motels (14.1 percent).—Marielle Medina, Inquirer Research
