UK: No evidence for routine removal of implants

LONDON— Britain’s health ministry says a review has found no evidence to recommend the routine removal of PIP breast implants for the estimated 40,000 women in the U.K. who have them.

But the government said Friday if the implant surgery was carried out by the country’s National Health Service, such as for breast cancer patients, it would pay for their removal if patients were concerned.

Britain’s government also said it expected private clinics to offer the same deal to women who paid for cosmetic breast implant surgery and are worried about the implants made by the now-defunct French company Poly Implant Prothese, or PIP.
