MANILA, Philippines — A former basketball player at the Adamson University is now under police custody after he allegedly threatened a university official who handed him a dismissal letter, an official from Manila Police District (MPD) said Thursday.
In an interview with reporters, Police Capt. Arnold Echalar, chief of the MPD-General Assignment and Investigation Section, said Papi Sarr’s arrest came after members of the MPD Police Station 5 received a call regarding a rowdy individual in the university’s gym at 9:45 a.m.
Upon responding to the area, policemen met the Fr. Aldrin Suan, 50, the so-called sports director of the university, who told police that he was threatened by the athlete.
“Doon sinabi sa mga pulis dinibdiban siya [dahil dun sa] dismissal letter na inabot niya kay suspect Papi Sarr,” Echalar said.
(That’s when the complainant said Papi Sarr started threatening him after giving a dismissal letter.)
Suan reportedly gave a letter which shows that Sarr would not be joining the line up of Adamson University’s men’s basketball team, Echalar noted.
After Sarr threatened Suan, Abdul Sarr, brother of Papi, tried to intervene which heightened the tension between the priest and the basketball player. Echalar said luckily, some people in the gym prevented the confrontation from getting worse.
Sarr, 24-year-old Cameroonian, is now detained at the MPD Station and will be facing charges of unjust vexation and grave threat due to the argument, Echalar said.
