MANILA, Philippines — A robbery suspect was killed in an encounter with the Quezon City police before dawn Friday, the Quezon City Police District reported.
Initial investigation showed that a police team was on routine patrol in Barangay Payatas A when a resident sought assistance.
The concerned resident told the police that robbers barged into his neighbor’s home.
Upon arriving at the site of the reported robbery, authorities ordered one of the suspects, 52-year-old Arnel Elcano, to surrender and kneel down.
Instead, the suspect drew out a knife and stabbed two of the responding officers, Capt. John Wayne Versoza and Cpl. Rocky Opiana.
Other police officers shot and killed Elcano.
A second suspect made good his escape.
Both Versoza and Opiana were brought to the hospital.
Recovered from the slain suspect were a double-bladed dagger, a blue sling bag with two heat-sealed plastic sachets of shabu and drug-using paraphernalia.
