Q.C. woman shoots husband in marital spat, claims self-defense

MANILA, Philippines—A woman in Quezon City faces a charge of parricide for shooting her husband to death during a marital spat at their home early Thursday.

The victim, Parmindel Singh, 43, an Indian national, died of gunshot wounds in the abdomen and the buttocks inflicted by his wife, Emelyn, 38. Singh died upon arriving to the General Malvar Hospital at around 3:02 a.m.

The Quezon City Police District’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit has in its custody Singh’s wife, who told investigators she and her husband had a violent quarrel.

Case investigator PO3 Jogene Hernandez said the woman surrendered the weapon, a 9 mm pistol, to the authorities.

The shooting happened during a heated argument between Evelyn and her husband, who supposedly came home intoxicated at around 12:35 a.m. Thursday.

The wife claimed that the shooting was an act in self-defense as her husband allegedly tried to beat her up again.

“She admitted to the crime so we are preparing parricide charges against her during the inquest proceedings,” said Chief Insp. Rodelio Marcelo, QCPD-CIDU head.

Initial investigation showed that the victim arrived intoxicated at their home on Emerald Street at the Silver Land Subdivision in Barangay Pasong Tamo and continued drinking beer.

While downing his beer, Singh confronted his wife over an alleged affair with another man, after which he allegedly beat her up.

Singh also threw an empty bottle at his wife and even chased her, police said.

Citing the woman’s testimony, Hernandez said Evelyn went upstairs, got a gun and returned to the living room. She shot Singh as he was allegedly about to attack her again, Marcelo said.
