Zubiri: Revive GMRC subject

Juan Miguel Zubiri

MANILA, Philippines — The sad fate of a vendor, who sustained second-degree burns after the balloons he was selling were set afire by unruly teenagers in Manila, highlights the need to revive Good Manners and Right Conduct (GMRC) as a subject in the basic education curriculum, Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said on Wednesday.

“It is evident that the moral values and character formation of those teenagers have gone wrong,” Zubiri said in a statement.

The Senate leader has introduced Senate Bill No. 310, which requires the teaching of GMRC in the elementary and secondary level in both public and private schools.

“It is hoped that this will equip Filipinos not just with the necessary skills, but more importantly the necessary values to be citizens with good manners and ethical convictions,” Zubiri said in filing the measure.

Once enacted into law, the measure will make GMRC part of the K to 12 curriculum in basic education.
