5 undocumented Indians nabbed by BI in Davao City

MANILA, Philippines — Five Indian nationals staying illegally in the country were arrested in Davao City by agents of the Bureau of Immigration (BI).
The undocumented aliens, according to Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente were arrested on February 4 during a series of operations conducted by operatives of the BI’s Intelligence Division Mindanao Task Group in their residences in Barangays Cabantian and Buhangin.
Morente said he issued a mission order authorizing BI agents to launch the operation after his office received a complaint from residents of Davao City that the subjects are allegedly engaged in loan sharking.
“They are now detained at our detention facility while undergoing deportation proceedings,” the BI chief said in a statement on Friday.
According to Morente, four of the Indians are “overstaying aliens” while one is an “illegal entrant” with no record of arrival.
BI acting intelligence division chief Fortunato Manahan Jr. said they also failed to present proof of legal residence in the country.
“They entered the country as mere tourists but they blatantly violated our immigration laws by overstaying and engaging in gainful activity without the appropriate permits and visa,” Manahan said.
