MANILA, Philippines —A woman was killed while six others were injured after a sports utility vehicle (SUV) reportedly went out of control in reverse and ran over several people in Quiapo, Manila on Tuesday.

Lt. Col. Reynaldo Magdaluyo, chief of the Manila Police District-Police Station 3, said the victims were just passing by the area in Quezon Boulevard when the driver of the SUV lost control of the vehicle at about 1:52 p.m.

“Ayon sa testigo natin, pag-start ng [Mitsubishi] Montero ay biglang umungol ang makina at hindi nila makontrol at umatras ng pagkabilis-bilis at pagkalakas-lakas na natamaaan ‘yung mga biktima na narito,” he said in an interview with reporters.

(According to our witness, when the engine of the [Mitsubishi] Montero started, it suddenly made a loud noise until the vehicle could not be controlled and it moved backward really fast that it hit the victims who were in the area.)

The driver of the vehicle and his companions are now in the custody of the police for investigation, according to the police official.

The victims, four females, and two males were rushed to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center and at the Metropolitan Medical Center.
