Today, January 5, is the 47th death anniversary of Pedro Gil after whom the old Calle Herran in Manila was renamed. A physician and journalist, Gil was elected representative of a Manila district in 1927 and was later elected to the first National Assembly. He was a member of the 1930 Independence Mission to the US, which worked for the passage of the first independence law for the Philippines.—Schatzi Quodala, Inquirer Research
