BJMP recaptures 5 escapees from Negros Oriental jail

MANILA, Philippines — Five inmates who bolted the Manjuyod District Jail in Negros Oriental on Monday, Feb. 1, were recaptured by the Bureau of Jail and Penology Management (BJMP).

In a statement on Saturday,  BJMP Region VII Director Jail Chief Supt. Paulino Moreno Jr. said two of the five inmates identified as Janly Callao and Ronie Flores, surrendered to authorities after the BJMP negotiated for their surrender with their relatives.

The other three escapees identified as Joseph Casido, Julan Paculanang, and Lito Pedro were recaptured in Sitio Calamboan, Barangay Ilaya in Tayasan, Negros Oriental on Saturday morning after a pursuit operation conducted by personnel of the BJMP Region VII and the Tayasan, Negros Oriental Police Station.

In a text message, BJMP spokesperson Jail Chief Insp. Xavier Solda said Casido was charged with murder while Callao, Paculanang and Pedro were charged with rape. Meanwhile, Flores was detained for illegal possession of firearms.

Meanwhile,  BJMP chief Jail Director Allan Iral reminded all BJMP regional directors to tighten security measures in jails to avoid future jailbreaks.

“We should always be steps ahead in monitoring the security situation in our facilities. Conduct jail inspections more often,” he said.

Iral also reminded all the BJMP regional directors to be more proactive in attending to security concerns in jail facilities.
