Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama ordered the suspension of the use of Block 27 of the North Reclamation as transfer station of Cebu City’s collected garbage because of the foul smell experienced by the establishments nearby.
Rama said he will meet with Councilor Edu Rama Jr., Public Services Committee chairperson and DPS head Dionisio Gualiza to discuss the city’s garbage disposal problems.
“Our garbage management efforts cannot be perfected right away. We will have to be making adjustments as we go along,” said Rama.
The mayor issued a cessation order prohibiting the dumping of garbage in the Inayawan Sanitary Landfill starting last Dec. 10.
A private facility in Pulog, Consolacion, now serves as the city’s dumping site.
A leased lot in Inayawan was used as the transfer station of garbage trucks coming from the southern barangays.
However, the rains during the past days made the area very muddy and useless. This prompted the Department of Public Services to allow the use of its garage on Block 27 as temporary transfer station.
Navarro told Cebu Daily News they are filling the leased lot in Inayawan to make it usable again.
Navarro also pointed out that because of the New Year celebration, the volume of garbage increased
The city’s daily garbage volume of about 380 tons increased by about 100 tons during the New Year celebration.
Navarro said in the morning of Jan. 1 alone, they brought 10 garbage trucks containing seven tons of garbage each to Block 27.
They started hauling the garbage to Pulog, Consolacion, in the afternoon of Jan. 1.
Navarro said they sprayed disinfectants on the garbage dumped in Block 27 but the smelling could not be prevented because of the erratic weather.
DPS hopes to complete the filling of the Inayawan transfer station today so they could use it again.
