MANILA, Philippines — Taal Volcano emitted white steam-laden plumes 50 to 100 meters tall in the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Sunday morning.
In its 8 a.m. bulletin, Phivolcs said Alert Level 3 is maintained over the volcano as they reminded the public that “sudden steam-driven and even weak phreatomagmatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, ash gall, and lethal volcanic gas expulsions” can still occur and affect areas within Volcano Island and nearby areas.
Phivolcs added that a total of 153 volcanic earthquakes were also recorded, which show magmatic activity beneath the Taal edifice that could lead to eruptive activity at the main crater.
“DOST-PHIVOLCS recommends that entry into Taal Volcano island as well as into areas over Taal Lake and communities erst of the island within a seven (7) km (kilometre) radius from the Main Crater must be strictly prohibited,” the bulletin reads.
“People are also advised to observe precautions due to ground displacement across fissures, frequent ash fall and minor earthquakes,” it added.
Phivolcs assured that they are monitoring Taal Volcano’s activity and that significant developments would be immediately communicated to the public.
